Cultural Activities

During the summer, the Downtown Mall is home to Fridays After Five, a weekly concert series hosted at the Charlottesville Pavilion.
Also located on the Downtown Mall is The Paramount Theatre. The Paramount provides great live entertainment all year, along with other special events.

The JPJ is the largest indoor venue in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Aside from being the home court of UVa’s Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, the JPJ hosts some of the worlds top entertainers and groups.
Charlottesville also plays host to two of Virginia’s largest cultural festivals– The Virginia Festival of the Book, and the Virginia Film Festival. Each year, the top filmakers, authors, and enthusiasts descend upon Charlottesville to celebrate their passion for film and the written word.

Although it is the County Seat of Albemarle County, Charlottesville is also an independent city. This means that it has its own government and taxing authority.
